Question Bank- Term I(only for practice)

Section A – Reading

1. Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that follow. 8

A large number of people have become more health conscious these

days, but are they truly healthy? The meaning of health has become

somewhat distorted.

Good health involves physical and mental well-being. The external looks

and features are not an indication of fit internal organs and systems. There

are lots of fit people who are psychologically unfit. Similarly, many

disabled people are happy and well adjusted to their physical state.

Compulsive exercising and righteous eating are a form of obsession, and

obsession is a form of mental illness.

There have been reports of a rise in the number of people who enroll in

gyms , engage personal trainers , eat vitamin pills, drink protein enriched

drinks. This may lead to them damaging body parts such as muscles and

joints due to overstraining.

Then there are those who suffer from an obsession with healthy eating.

This condition has been termed as orthorexia nervosa.

The orthorexics are solely concerned with the quality of the food they eat.

They plan their diet according to their personal understanding of which

foods are truly healthy. They avoid food products such as sugar, salt,

caffeine, alcohol, gluten, dairy foods, etc. This includes foods that have

been sprayed with pesticides or contain artificial additives .

This obsession with ‘good food’ and ‘bad food’ can cause them to

become malnourished.

It affects equal number of men and women, generally aged over 30

and who are well-educated. They read about healthy diet and foods to

be avoided in newspapers and magazines, research on the internet

and have the time and money to get what they believe to be pure and

2

healthy alternatives . Thus, they are most susceptible to this obsession.

The condition is everywhere in the modern society. There is an increase in

the number of nutritionists, dieticians and naturopaths and the people

consulting them. Trainers in the gym promote certain foods to enhance

performance. And finally the bookshops are flooded with books on

healthy food and the right diet for different age groups.

a. Which are the two kinds of obsession regarding health prevalent today?

b. Who are the most susceptible to these obsessions?

c. On what basis do orthorexics plan their diet?

d. Why does the writer say that obsession with eating is everywhere in

modern society?

e. How do orthorexics get the information about right eating?

f. Which foods are generally avoided by those who are diet conscious?

g. What do you think are the ill effects of righteous dieting?

h. What do you think are the negative effects of compulsive exercising?

2. Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that follow. 12

There are differing opinions around the world over the existence of zoos.

Supporters of zoos argue that zoos benefit the animals greatly,

because the animals are well looked after in the zoos. Moreover, zoos

also serve as a form of protection to the animals who do not need to

worry about poaching or being hunted down by predators. The wounded

and sick animals can be immediately treated.

It has been argued that keeping wild animals in zoos is the only way

that people can come face to face with them and learn about these

animals. Television viewing is not a substitute for the real experience.

People who are in favour of zoos argue that zoos play an essential

role in conserving the endangered species of animals. This involves

breeding an animal in captivity and then reintroducing it to the wild.

The opponents of zoos accept that some zoos do attempt to recreate

the natural habitat of the animal but it is still a confined area. Animals are

3

deprived of free movement in zoos. All said and done, zoos are artificial

environments for wild animals. Many zoos all over the world do take excellent care of the animals but

it is not the case for all the zoos around the world. Animals live in

appalling conditions in zoos that are like prison cells and this causes the

animals to become distressed. In some instances animals are ill-treated

by their zoo keepers. In such an environment, animals can easily slip into

depression, which can lead to early death. Hence, the life expectancy is

shorter in animals that live in zoos.

Animals living in confined and unsuitable environment and displayed

for public entertainment behave unnaturally. When people and children

visit these zoos , they are not being given a true impression of the animal’s

habits and habitat. A more precise and informative picture is available

through television programmes .

The value of zoo breeding programmes is also being questioned.

Although zoos are attempting to restore a balance in nature by trying to

increase the population of endangered species, it is being done in a

small scale. Some species of animals do not reproduce well in captivity.

These animals are unable to live in the wild after living in cages.

Answer the following questions. 8

a. Give two advantages of zoos.

b. What is the result of unhealthy environment of zoos on the animals?

c. Why are the captive breeding programmes being questioned?
